Pirates split twinbill with Owls

MARSHALL, Mo. – Despite scoring a combined 30 runs, the Hannibal softball team split a doubleheader with Marshall Saturday afternoon.

Hannibal won the opener 19-6, but lost in the nightcap 17-11.

In the opener, Hannibal's Kylie McAfee hit two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning that broke the program's record for home runs in a single season. It also gave the Pirates a 19-6 advantage.

Hannibal blew the game open with six runs in the second inning. Maggie Woodside hit a bases-clearing double that made it 7-3. Woodside finished the game with three doubles and four hits total with four RBIs.

The Pirates banged out 19 hits, and six went for extra bases. Taylor Simms and Ashley Hart both hit triples.

Sydney Hart and McAfee each drove in three runs.

Hannibal couldn't keep up the same scoring pace in the second game as Marshall scored 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning to turn a 7-2 deficit into a 12-7 lead. The Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Owls scored five runs across the final three frames.

The Pirates had 12 hits again, as McAfee led with three hits. Woodside drove in three runs to give her seven for the twinbill.
