HANNIBAL – Andrew Pollard likes seeing the Hannibal softball team be aggressive on the base paths.

The Pirates were too aggressive Tuesday night.

Hannibal hit into two inning-ending double plays, had a runner caught stealing and had a pair of run downs in the seventh inning all eliminate base runners in an 10-2 North Central Missouri Conference loss to Kirksville at Veterans Field.

“We didn't really do the right things in those situations,” Pollard said. “We just needed the base runners. I'm not saying that cost us the game, but it definitely put us out of it.”

Those outs came as Kirksville began to pull away.

Emilee Wilson cut Hannibal's deficit to 5-2 with a two-RBI single in the fourth and gave the Pirates two runners on base. Avery Lake, however, hit a sharp line drive to Kirksville first baseman Sophie Stuart, who stepped on the bag to double off Wilson at first and end the inning. The inning's first out came when Ashley Hart unsuccessfully tried to advance from first to third on a passed ball.

Hannibal had a similar play happen in the fifth when Sydney Hart singled, but was doubled off when Adrya Nichelson lined out to second base, ending the inning again.

“We just ran ourselves into outs,” Pollard said. “It was tough.”

The Pirates learned their lesson.

“I just don't think it was a smart way to do it,” Hannibal's Taylor Simms said. “Some of the girls were smart, but they got caught. That just brings our attitude down, and then we can't build off that.”

Kirksville answered Hannibal's two runs with three runs in the sixth with an RBI double and RBI single. Two more runs in the seventh came on back-to-back RBI singles that made it 10-2.

Hannibal had two runners on to start the bottom of the seventh, but both were doubled off in separate rundowns. A strikeout ended the game.

Hannibal had nine hits as Hart, Kylie McAfee and Wilson had two apiece. The Pirates, however, committed five errors.

Kirksville banged out 14 hits as five went for extra bases.
