HANNIBAL — The Hannibal Police Department will begin the process of finding the next head of the department after Chief Jacob Nacke announced his retirement.

Nacke has served the Hannibal community as a member of HPD for 20 years, playing a vital role in building community partnerships and strengthening public safety while overseeing growth and modernization efforts within the department.

In a statement announcing the retirement, City Manager Andy Dorian said the city extends its gratitude for two decades of service from Nacke.

“His leadership has made a lasting impact on the Hannibal Police Department and the residents it serves,” the statement said. “We wish Chief Nacke and his family all the best in his retirement and future endeavors.”

“Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with outstanding city staff and build meaningful relationships across this organization and within our community,” Nacke said in his retirement letter. “Those partnerships have been invaluable, and I am grateful for the support and collaboration I have experienced over the years.”

Nacke will officially step down in early June, though Lt. Alex Grote will lead the department in day-to-day operations starting May 22 as interim chief.

“It has truly been an honor to serve the citizens of Hannibal over the past two decades,” Nacke said. “I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated team of men and women who go out every day with the goal of making our community a safer place.”

After rising through the ranks at the department, Nacke was tapped to be Chief in 2022, taking over following the retirement of Lyndell Davis.

“The Hannibal Police Department has a proud history dating back to the late 1800s, and I recognize that I am only a small part of that legacy,” Nacke said. “I am extremely proud to have contributed to its continued service and growth.”

With Nacke’s retirement, the City of Hannibal plans to begin the process of finding the next police chief, with a search starting within the ranks of HPD itself. Dorian’s statement on behalf of the city said the search will ensure a committment to a smooth transition and to maininting the high standards of service and professionalism expected within the Hannibal Police Department.

“I remain fully confident in our officers, civilian staff, and city leadership to continue our mission of honor, professionalism, and dedication,” Nacke’s letter said. “I know the future of this department is bright, and the citizens of Hannibal will continue to be well served.”
