Ronald James Steward, 77, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at Delmar Gardens Nursing Home in Overland Park, Kansas.

Ron was born on August 8, 1948, in Hannibal, Missouri, to Josephine and Frances Steward. He graduated from Hannibal Senior High School in 1966 before serving in the United States Army and later remaining active in the Army Reserve. In 1983, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

Ron dedicated 25 years of his career to the Missouri Department of Mental Health, where he supported and advocated for children and young adults with mental health needs.

In 1970, he married his high school sweetheart, Rhoda, and they celebrated 55 years of marriage. Together they raised two sons, Ryan and Rustin. More than anything else in life, Ron was proud of his family and the life he built with his wife.

Ron was a good man — intelligent, funny, gregarious, and often the life of the party, adored by all. A consummate audiophile, he loved his large collection of R&B and jazz music. He took great pride in caring for his yard, and his garage was truly his happy place. He loved to laugh, had a wonderful sense of humor, and never hesitated to say “I love you” to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Rhoda Gibson-Steward; his sons, Ryan and Rustin, of Brooklyn, New York; his brother, Joseph Steward of Wentzville, Missouri; his aunt, Fannie Griffin of Hannibal, Missouri; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Frances Steward; his brother, David Wayne Steward; and his sister, Dorothy Fonza.

Ron will be remembered for his deep love of family, his strength through life’s challenges, and the many memories shared with all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
