Palmyra R-I Board of Education approves budget

PALMYRA, Mo. | Palmyra R-1 Board of Education members approved the budget for the 2020-2021 school year during their regular meeting Tuesday, June 9.

Superintendent Kirt Malone discussed aspects of the budget, including a $500 base salary increase and $400 step per year for eligible teachers and a 1.46% salary increase in addition to the step for non-certified staff members. The budget includes $1,757,135 in capital improvements, such as a new concession building and restrooms, grandstands, press box, scoreboard,perimeter fencing south of the gym, a plaza with entry gate on the south side of the gym and an entry gate at the north parking lot. The budget also includes new high school band uniforms, the purchase of a used school bus to replace an aging bus, and a Vo-Ag enhancement grant match.

Malone discussed the status of construction for the new high school athletic complex. Concrete work for the front plaza area is complete, and masonry work for the concession area is planned for this week. The scoreboard is installed, sidewalks are being installed and the grandstands are set to be in place by July.

OPAA Director of Nutrition Services Heather Rice said food service program members served thousands of meals to local children following the closure of school buildings in response to COVID-19. Meals will continue to be distributed through the month of June.
