KIRKSVILLE, Mo. | The Hannibal boys soccer team made a statement in its season opening 9-2 win over Kirksville on the road Thursday night.
Hannibal was led by senior Caleb Young, who came through with three goals in Thursday's win.
“We were up 2-1 at halftime and Kirksville tied it up two minutes into the second half,” said Hannibal head coach Eric Hill. “Then our offense came alive. Saw a lot of good things out of the team tonight.”
Goalkeeper Parker Terrill had seven saves and only two goals allowed.
Although Young coming up with a hat trick, it was a total team effort offensively. Six other Pirates were able to score a goal apiece, which included Tristen Terrill, Sheldon Bergheger, Blayde Terrill, DaeShon Glasgow, Drew Porter and Drew Tweedy.
Glasgow led Hannibal with three assists, with Travauhn Jenkins, Bergheger and Tristen Terrill each having one assist.
The Hannibal and Kirksville junior varsity teams played to a scoreless tie earlier on Thursday.
“We had some good chances in (the JV game), but were unable to pinch one in,” Hill said.
Hannibal (1-0) will host Canton (2-0) in its home opener on Monday, with the Pirates hosting senior night.
