Transportation department seeks workers for winter maintenance crews

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is hiring maintenance personnel ahead of winter operations, with hundreds of full-time positions open statewide for maintenance and emergency maintenance equipment operators.

The positions offer year-round work that extends beyond snow and ice removal to include mowing, striping and other roadway maintenance duties throughout the year.

Hourly pay starts at $20, depending on experience level and area of operation, and workers in entry- or intermediate-level positions are eligible for a pay increase after their first year on the job.

Full-time maintenance employees receive training along with a benefits package that includes paid leave, medical, vision and dental insurance, and a retirement plan. MoDOT describes its workplace as diverse and centered on safety and personal development.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a criminal background check; the agency noted that a misdemeanor or felony conviction does not automatically disqualify a candidate. While a commercial driver’s license permit is preferred, MoDOT said it offers assistance and training to help new hires obtain a commercial drivers license.

MoDOT maintains more than 33,000 miles of state highway, one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country, requiring a large seasonal workforce to keep roads clear during winter storms.
