Dollar General offers back-to-school deals during Missouri’s tax-free weekend

GOODLETTSVILLE — Dollar General is rolling out back-to-school discounts timed to coincide with Missouri’s tax-free shopping holiday this weekend, offering more than 70 school and stationery items priced at $1 or less as families prepare for the new school year.
Missouri’s sales tax holiday runs Aug. 7-9, allowing shoppers to purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, computers and other items without paying state sales tax. Dollar General, which operates nearly 700 stores across Missouri, said the timing lets customers combine the state exemption with its own promotional pricing.
Through Aug. 8, the retailer is offering three assorted two-pocket folders for $1, 60-sheet one-subject notebooks in college- or wide-ruled styles for 50 cents, and 100-sheet filler paper in college- or wide-ruled styles for 50 cents. A second round of deals begins Aug. 9 and runs through Aug. 15, featuring Pilot G2 gel pens for $3.50, two assorted poly folders for $1, and a buy-one, get-one 50% off offer on notebooks and journals.
Dollar General is also promoting season-long savings through Sept. 8 on items including $5 backpacks, 50-cent Crayola 24-count crayons, $1 Crayola 12-count colored pencils, $1.50 Crayola 10-count markers, 50-cent iMagine school glue, and three packs of iMagine crayons for $1. The company said exclusions apply to some season-long deals and recommended customers check its weekly ads or mobile app for full details.
The retailer said all items in its back-to-school section are priced at or below last year’s everyday low prices, spanning national brands such as Crayola, Elmer’s, Sharpie, Expo and BIC, alongside its private-label lines iMagine, OfficeHub and Crafter’s Closet.
Dollar General is also extending a discount to educators, offering verified teachers 30% off stationery products through Sept. 7. The company said the coupon typically appears in a customer’s DG Digital Coupon account within 24 to 48 hours of verification, with a limit of one use per 24-hour period and up to 10 uses during the promotional period.
Separately, the company is running a “Teacher Social Media Sweepstakes” on Instagram through Aug. 15 that will award 20 educators a $250 Dollar General gift card, with winners announced Aug. 22. No purchase is necessary to enter.
The company said additional savings are available to customers who sign up for a free myDG account, which provides access to digital coupons, a recurring $5 off $25 purchase promotion each Saturday, and one free delivery on a myDG Delivery order.
